📋 Getting Started in a New Career

Jack joined Murphy Group in September 2024, eager to take the first step in his career. While his original apprenticeship plan changed, the Murphy team quickly helped him find an alternative: a tailored apprenticeship through Highland Learning Academy.

“I had applied for a different apprenticeship, but when that programme wasn’t available, Murphy’s helped me connect with HLA. They were incredibly supportive and helped me choose modules that matched my job role perfectly.”

📚 Learning That Fits the Role

As an Assistant Planner, Jack’s responsibilities include creating timeframes and scheduling works on-site in the transmission sector a highly technical and fast moving environment.

To support this, he selected modules within the SCQF Level 8 Business Administration framework that directly aligned with his responsibilities, helping him build practical skills while learning on the job.

🤝 Tutor Support and Structure

With regular face-to-face meetings, clear expectations, and consistent tutor support, Jack found the learning process both smooth and rewarding:

“The whole process was well-organised. My tutor was always available whether I needed a quick call or just some feedback. That availability helped me stay confident and focused.”

🎯 The Benefits of Balancing Work and Learning

Completing the course gave Jack a real sense of achievement and valuable workplace skills he’s already applying in his current role:

      • Time management and scheduling skills relevant to infrastructure projects

      • Improved confidence and communication

      • Self-motivation and goal tracking

      • Experience balancing responsibilities in a high pressure environment

“Balancing both my job and the course was challenging at times,” Jack says, “but it taught me how to manage multiple responsibilities a skill I’ll carry with me for life.”
