Are appraisals a thing of the past ?

Performance Management in 2025

Whilst dusting down our performance management course ready for its next delivery I thought it was time to do some research to ensure it’s still up to date and relevant.

I was surprised and delighted to see the plaster finally being ripped off and the question ‘are annual appraisals dead’ finally being asked.

As we work with managers across industries and across Scotland it’s always worried me that few have mastered the ability to ensure all appraisals are delivered meaningfully and consistently on time. I often hear, ‘I know they are important, but we just don’t get time’ or ‘it’s a tick boxing exercise’ and I totally get it. I’ve often thought there must be a better way.

The article goes on to say ‘It’s 2025. Evaluating an employee’s performance just once per year doesn’t cut it. Effective performance management strategies aren’t built on infrequent actions. They’re built on regular, consistent feedback’.

This is why more and more organisations are shifting to a culture of continuous performance management.

The good news for me is that this supports our theories in our performance management courses and gives us the research and backing to really simplify what we do and how we do it.

At its heart, performance management is about ensuring our teams are delivering what we need to achieve organisational goals supporting, monitoring, coaching and feeding back to ensure success.

Our three day Visionary Leadership Programme is a management development programme aimed at experienced and senior managers. It explores management theories and models and how to use these to improve the performance of the team, the organisation and of themselves.  Find out more by clicking here to book onto our next session.
